Walking in the Shade // Andando por la Sombra
Tips for surviving Sevilla summers 101 - look for the shade
The other day as I was walking home from the supermarket, there were two American girls in front of me walking with two older Spanish women, it looked suspiciously like the typical American studying abroad + host mom situation. Usually in these cases the host moms accompany them for errands or quick tour of the city, especially upon their arrival.
“Niñas!!” yelled the two Spanish women, walking under the shaded part of the street, to two 2 American girls who were walking ahead of them, in the sunny part of the street, “A LA SOMBRA! (To the shade!)” It was an order, based in Sevillano logic: one does not walk in the sun in the summer, and this knowledge must be imparted upon those who don’t know better.
The girls immediately obliged.
Walking in the streets of Sevilla in the summer the sunny side of the street is almost always sans pedestrians. Following the shade is the only way to survive walking outdoors in the Sevillano summer. That, and a solid siesta each afternoon to later be able to enjoy the refreshing nights along the river, where those who have braved a summer in Sevilla come out to play.
