In Napoli it’s Ferragusto (last two weeks of Aug) that the city shuts down. I also like routine so it bugs me.

I went to Sevilla in July and I loved it even in the heat! The bike ride we went on was epic. Ceramics class sounds awesome! It sounds like you are like me - you like group fitness and activities

beautiful writing. a 2 month break is what we could all use here in the US!

In Italy it works in a similar way, cities like Milan or Rome are empty in August

It's sometimes nice when life forces you to pause and slow down. That's one of the things I appreciate most about living in Spain :)

I used to do my own routine break typically March through June because the weather was the best, just before the unbearable hot. Families weren't on vacation except short Spring breaks, and snowbirds were headed back north. I crave that routine but it's no longer applicable in my current situation. Great read!

I can certainly relate on the routine thing. I think it's good though to find opportunities to retain the brain and body like this.

There’s a routine to breaking the routine - perfectly put! My Valencian neighbors are rigid in how they relax - to an inland or coastal village for a certain 3 weeks. I wish I could get my act together to head to the north coast each August!

You should try it one summer! Love the north coast.

same, it's so wild and beautiful! We've done road trips around Galicia, Asturias and the Pyrenees so far, but it looks like have left it a bit late to book a beach-side cottage for August... next year :-)

It's okay to do nothing. I need to tell myself that from time to time as a parent =)

When I was young, we used to go every year to the beach for 3-4 weeks in July or August. The same beachcamping in southern France, all the way from the Netherlands with our car filled to the rim. Together with 50% of the Dutch population. The other 50% would go to Northern Italy. Since our tent was 50 meters from the sea these 3 weeks were characterised by walking around in your bikini 24/7, reading terrible summer novels and taking naps all day long. After I turned 18 I decided not to join these weeks anymore and instead go backpacking over summer in Asia or go wildcamping and hiking in Scandinavia. But soon I started to miss these weeks of unplugging. They are indeed very much needed! Not having to plan or do anything. But just waking up and do exactly what you feel like for 3 weeks. And it is perfectly okay to do sudoku all day and let your duolingo strike fade for once. And so my summers are characterised again by at least a week of beach. Just to reset before the new year starts again.
